Cold Lay Macadam (Tarmac) – 25kg Weatherproof Bag
£9.55 ex VAT
About this item:
Cold Lay Macadam (Tarmac) is a ready-to-use bituminous repair material for patching damaged driveways, footpaths and similar asphalt surfaces. It can be applied directly from the bag without heating or mechanical mixing, making it practical for small repairs where hot-laid asphalt and specialist equipment would be uneconomical. The material is suitable as a base or wearing course and can be spread using an ordinary rake, spade or trowel before compaction.
Successful repairs depend on preparing a dry, firm and clean base, followed by thorough rolling or tamping. Greater compaction produces a denser surface and better finish, while repairs deeper than 30mm should be installed and compacted in separate layers. The material hardens gradually according to temperature and compaction and may remain susceptible to marking during its early life, particularly in warm weather. Supplied in a sealed 25kg weatherproof bag, it offers convenient storage and manageable handling for trade maintenance teams and experienced DIY users.

Common Questions:
Q. How much area will one 25kg bag cover?
A. One 25kg bag covers approximately 0.4m² when laid and compacted to a depth of 30mm. Actual coverage will vary according to the repair shape, depth and degree of compaction.
Q. Can Cold Lay Macadam be used for repairs deeper than 30mm?
A. Yes. Repairs deeper than 30mm should be completed in separate layers. Thoroughly compact the first layer before adding and compacting the remaining material to the finished level.
Q. Does the repair area need to be dry?
A. Yes. The base should be dry, firm, clean and capable of supporting the expected loading. Remove loose material, weeds, standing water and contamination before application.
Q. Can it be installed during cold weather?
A. Cold Lay Macadam should not be installed below approximately 5°C or in very wet conditions. Workability improves when the outside temperature is above 10°C.
Q. Is a tack coat required before application?
A. A bitumen-emulsion tack coat is recommended when applying Cold Lay Macadam over concrete or paving. It improves adhesion and can help extend the repair’s service life, particularly where freeze-thaw exposure is expected.
